Biographical/Historical note

Michael Albert Kwamena-Poh. Commonly known as 'Teacher Kwamena' in his early years and 'Prof' in the latter part of his life was born in Mamfe-Akuapem on October 14, 1931 (official accounts state the year of his birth 1932). Little Michael's father died when he was only one and a half years old. Following the death of his father, his mother Mary Gyamea returned to live with her parents in Mangoase, then a thriving cocoa depot town in the Eastern Region of Ghana. His grandparents, Chief Akwa Asare and Madam Deborah Twumwa Akwa-Asare, took him into their care after the death of his father.

He began his early education at the Mamfe Presbyterian Primary School with the active support of his maternal grandmother. From the Mamfe Presbyterian Primary School, he went to live with his paternal uncle at Bechem in the Brong-Ahafo Region where he attended school for a couple of years. He returned to Mamfe and proceeded to the Larteh Boarding School for his senior school studies. After completing his senior school program, he enrolled at the then Presbyterian Training College, Akropong- Akuapem from 1948-1951, and trained as a teacher obtaining a Teacher's Certificate 'A' qualification.

He left Adawso in 1957 to teach at the Mamfe Presbyterian Middle School from 1957 to 1958. In 1957 whilst teaching form four classes at the Mamfe Middle School, he met and courted Cecilia Kumea Danso-Manu, a charming young Home Science teacher who had been transferred to the school in February of that year. They got married on 18th January 1958.

Professor Kwamena-Poh was a prolific writer who conducted extensive research on Akuapem and its history, not only in the district, but also in Denmark. His research works and output were not limited to the history of Akuapem, but covered topics such as the Presbyterian Church, the history of Education in Ghana, the Cocoa industry in Ghana. He also focused on Akuapem and Akan tradition and culture, and biographical sketches of great Africans. He contributed to an innovative project known as African History in Maps with four international collaborators. He authored several books, manuscripts and articles.
